As every year, the Highly Skilled Migrants scheme will be updated. From 1 January 2026, new salary thresholds and application fees will apply for highly skilled migrants, as part of the annual adjustments to keep immigration requirements aligned with rising wages and living costs. All you need to know is in this article, so just keep reading…

Increased IND application fees

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) adjusts residence permit application fees every year. As of 1 January 2026, these fees will increase by 4.4%. You can find the updated amounts on the IND website by navigating to Costs of residence permit, then Work, and finally Highly skilled migrant. The adjustment reflects broader increases in prices and wages and applies to residence permit applications submitted from that date onward. Employers and applicants should factor these higher costs into their planning for international hires, to ensure full compliance.

Salary thresholds applicable throughout 2026

Before moving forward, keep in mind that these required amounts represent the minimum gross monthly salary (excluding holiday allowance) an employee must earn to qualify for a residence permit.

For 2026, the following gross monthly salary thresholds will apply:

  • Highly skilled migrant aged 30 and over: €5,942
  • Highly skilled migrant younger than 30: €4,357
  • Reduced salary criterion (highly skilled migrant): €3,122

Please note: the applicable salary threshold is determined by the date of submission of the residence permit application or, in the case of a change of employer, by the start date of the new employment contract.

Long story short

If your company hires international talent, you should review employment contracts and budgets to ensure compliance with the new thresholds. Staying up to date with these changes helps avoid delays, rejections, or compliance issues when sponsoring highly skilled migrants in 2026.

Timing is crucial, as salary requirements may differ depending on when an extension or new application is submitted, making careful planning essential.
